Characterization
Characterization is the way an author develops a character through his/her thoughts and actions. The personality of the character is revealed through characterization.
Eliza: "He's no right to take away my character. My character is the same to me as any lady's" (Shaw 21, Act I).
Eliza's words make her character come to life for the reader. We see for the first time that Eliza is brave enough to say she should be respected just as much as any lady. Her courage and independence continue to strengthen throughout the play.
