Stereotype
A stereotype is typically a character who possesses certain identifiable traits. These characteristics connect them to a conventional, cliché image (ex. the "dumb blonde"). The reader can use these characteristics to foresee how the character will speak and act. Settings can also be stereotypical (ex. a dark castle at midnight).
Mrs. Pearce: "Well, dont you want to be clean and sweet and decent, like a lady? You know you cant be a nice girl inside if youre a dirty slut outside" (Shaw 45, Act II).
This is a very judgmental comment made by Mrs. Pearce. Ladies were stereotypically dressed in the most elegant clothes and had the best hygiene. If you were dirty and living on the streets, you were considered a slut.
