Symbols
Symbols are objects or characters that represent ideas far beyond the literal meaning of their existence. They are used to emphasize a point the author is trying to make.
Eliza: "Tǝ-oo banches o voylets trod into the mad...She is no doubt as clean as she can afford to be; but compared to the ladies she is very dirty. Her features are no worse than theirs; but their condition leaves something to be desired" (Shaw 13, Act I).
Flowers symbolize Eliza's transformation. She blossoms into a beautiful young lady, but her personality does not change; she is still the same flower. |
