Setting
Setting includes the time at which events in the story are happening and the location of where the events are happening. Descriptions of the weather or the surrounding area can also describe the setting of a literary work.
"Freddy opens his umbrella and dashes off Strandwards, but comes into collision with a flower girl who is hurrying in for shelter, knocking her basket out of her hands. A blinding flash of lightning, followed instantly by a rattling peal of thunder, orchestrates the incident" (Shaw 13, Act I).
The setting in this scene provides foreshadowing regarding Eliza and Freddy's relationship. Rain suggests change, and the spark of lightning that occurs the moment he runs into Eliza symbolizes the spark of love between them in Act IV.
